Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is a family of open-weight image models released by Stability AI. It is not a website so much as downloadable model weights, used through community front ends such as ComfyUI or a WebUI; Stability also offers a metered cloud API.

Being open is the defining difference: the model runs on your own machine, images never touch a third party, and no platform moderation is imposed on generation. For commercial work, or when the source material is confidential, that alone often settles the choice.

The ecosystem is the other advantage. ControlNet-style conditioning constrains composition by pose, depth or edge map; LoRAs train a specific style or character from a handful of examples. “The same character in every image” or “match this line art exactly” is achievable here and difficult in Midjourney.

How to use

1. On a computer with a dedicated GPU, install a front end such as ComfyUI or a WebUI (most offer one-click installers).
2. Download a base model from Stability or a community hub like Civitai or LiblibAI and place it in the models folder.
3. Launch the interface, write positive and negative prompts, set size, steps and sampler, and generate.
4. Once the basics look right, layer on ControlNet, LoRAs or upscalers to refine.

Best for

• Privacy-sensitive projects: everything runs locally, so neither inputs nor outputs leave your machine.
• Series that need a consistent character or product: LoRAs plus reference control are among the most reliable approaches.
• Generating strictly from sketches or line art: ControlNet holds the composition firmly in place.
• Batch production and automation: workflows can be scripted into your own pipeline.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

• Self-hostable, platform-independent, with no per-image charges.
• The richest set of controls, far more precise than closed online tools.
• A vast pool of community models and tutorials covers almost any style.

Limitations

• Steep setup: you configure the environment, choose models and tune parameters, and local use needs a capable GPU.
• Out of the box it looks worse than Midjourney; good results depend on experience.
• Licence terms differ between versions, and newer models attach conditions to commercial use — check each one.
• Training data behind community models is often opaque, which carries copyright risk for commercial work.
